Well, if you're kind enough to be reading this, I'll let you in on a secret, which is that my third album is almost finished and will be out by the end of the year, probably in November.

I think you'll like it. And hey, if you're reading this, send me an email at jarret@jarretcooper.com and I'll do something nice for you. :)
Jarret Coopertag:jarretcooper.com,2005:Post/60687282016-04-20T17:00:00-07:002016-04-23T14:19:10-07:00Prince

It's fatuous and narcissistic for someone like me to even pretend to be a "musician" long enough to "pay tribute" to someone like Prince, the greatest musician in living memory. There are certainly enough wonderful and well-written tributes coming thick and fast today (I recommend this one by the great Rob Sheffield) that I don't need to put in my two cents. But I've never been this shaken by the death of someone I didn't know and never met. Stunned, didn't see it coming, still trying to absorb it.

No one came close, ever. I'd hate to blame him for my musical output, and would hate to hold my best song up to his worst, but he was the biggest musical influence in my life. Every aspect of his artistry was, and remains, staggering. I couldn't touch him, and neither can you, and neither can anyone. It's heartening to see the world (seemingly) realize this en masse...and heartbreaking that it had to happen this way.

Sometimes it snows in April

Sometimes I feel so bad

Sometimes I wish that life was never-ending

But all good things they say never last

And love, it isn't love until it's passed

It's a bit (or a lot) embarrassing to look at all the blogs and Facebook posts I've made in the past three or four years, saying "new CD coming this year for sure!" I clearly can't be trusted. :) But now that "Stars On The Ceiling", five years in the making, is finally out in the world, I couldn't be happier with how it turned out, and I'm glad I only put it out when it was really ready.

So thank you all for the incredibly great response -- all I ask is that if you like it, tell your friends. :) (And thanks to those of you who have -- you know who you are -- I will have to send you something like a "Kickstarter reward" as soon as I think of something worth sending...).

Oh, and tell ME too! Email me at jarret [AT] jarretcooper [DOT] com and let me have it!

Hope you all had a great 2015 and happy holidays to one and all.

Busy recording, playing, writing. There WILL be a new CD this year...but I'll have a couple of other things to announce PRETTY DAMN SOON.

Jarret Coopertag:jarretcooper.com,2005:Post/60687222013-11-30T16:00:00-08:002013-11-30T09:16:35-08:00Update

Hey it's me again, the guy whose name is the URL for this site. I have news both good and not-as-good. The not-as-good news is that the new album won't be out until early 2014 (I'm just a helpless target of "sorry for the wait" jokes at this point...). The good news is that it's going to be much better than it would have been had I rushed it out (which I was basically doing until I realized it was a bad move), and it's coming along quite nicely. This one's going to be more ME than before, as far as instruments go, though I'm lucky (again) to have a superb drummer helping me out -- this time it's Oren Williams from Pirate Radio.

And speaking of Pirate Radio, some more good news: we're playing at the Hotel Utah in San Francisco next Sunday December 8, on a bill with Rust & Whiskey and the Tough Brothers. And if you can think of a triple bill more manly than that, all toughness, whiskey and pirates, well, more power to you, but think about coming out to hear us instead. Adding a couple new songs to the set, and you can also admire my beautiful do-it-yourself keyboard/MacBook rig.

Oh, and keep watching this space...there won't be a new CD announcement for a little while yet, but I think I'll have something for you in December...

Jarret Coopertag:jarretcooper.com,2005:Post/60687212013-08-25T17:00:00-07:002013-08-25T13:33:36-07:00Still back! Busy though

So here's a clip of Pirate Radio's show last month at El Rio. A little shaky (and brief) but it sounds pretty good! This is probably my favorite PR song to play; we really click as a four-piece here. I also learned, watching this, that I should probably put down the Macbook screen while I'm playing guitar. People paid money, they deserve to see me.

I'm in the middle of a hectic self-imposed schedule to get my new CD out by the end of the year. In service to this madness I spent five hours in the studio today recording acoustic guitar. it takes awhile when you have not "mad skills", and although my rhythm playing in the PR clip above is pretty good, I am no Django Reinhardt. I'm not even Django Unchained, although since I don't know what that would even mean, maybe I shouldn't go that far.

In other news, I think I have an album title (and it does not have to do with waiting or sorrow). But no album art yet; I need a hand with that. Email me if you do that kind of thing and you're not too far from SF.

Jarret Coopertag:jarretcooper.com,2005:Post/60687202013-07-11T17:00:00-07:002020-01-08T09:54:11-08:00Welcome back!

And that goes for me too. This site has languished for a couple of years now -- don't they all? -- but my absence has been particularly embarrassing given that the video intro for the site (which was used to advertise my first CD) featured a big text block saying "it's 2008" well into 2013. And, of course, the joke was that the CD was called "Sorry for the Wait", and its release was then followed by -- you guessed it -- another really, really long wait.

Well, the end of that wait is in sight. I can't really excuse myself for taking this long to finish my (as yet untitled) followup album, but I will say that 2013 in particular has been, shall we say, one for the books. As you probably know, I haven't been completely idle -- most of my musical energy for the past three years has gone into playing and recording with "my" two bands, Pirate Radio and The Wandering Jews. But the task of writing and recording my own music has hit one setback after another -- some silly, others quite profound. Believe me, no one's more disappointed than I am.

Anyway, I'm back with a completely overhauled website, soon to be updated further with photos, videos, new audio tracks, and regular (knock wood) posts to this here blog. I'll provide vague progress reports on my new CD (tentatively scheduled for December 2013) and real information about upcoming shows with the Pirates and/or the Jews (both of whom also have new CDs coming out this year, with me on 'em and everything). Beyond that, I'm just another dude with a blog, so hold onto your chairs, folks. The ship has relaunched, so take a look around and let me know what you think -- email me at jarret@jarretcooper.com and by god let's put this thing into motion.
